Born in Fife, centre half or left back Jack McBean had been playing for Kirkaldy Wanderers alongside two other future Arsenal players, David Danskin and Peter Connolly, when he was signed by then amateur club Royal Arsenal at the end of 1888, making his senior debut in an FA Cup qualifying tie against Lyndhurst. He played his final senior match of 6 in an FA Cup tie against Small Heath (now Birmingham City) in 1892 and went on to play for The Royal Ordnance.
