Glasgow born inside forward Billy Martin began his football career with Shawfield, from where he was signed by Second Division club Bradford Park Avenue in 1937, making his Football League debut at Bury in February 1937. He soon established himself in the first team and had scored 9 goals in 65 matches for The Avenue when the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 forced the abandonment of peacetime football and effectively ended his football career.
