Description

Hanley, Staffordshire born right back Ben Marsden joined hometown club Port Vale during the First World War and made his debut for them in a wartime league match against Bury at Gigg Lane in September 1918, playing a total of six wartime league games for the club, and he remained with Port Vale immediately after the War, spending the 1919-20 season at The Old Recreation Ground without making a first team appearance.

In the summer of 1920 he moved to Queen’s Park Rangers, and made his Football League debut against Brentford in December 1920, making 16 appearances in their inaugural Football League campaign. He spent another four seasons at Loftus Road and took over penalty duties in December 1922, scoring 6 times from the spot in 132 appearances for Rangers, before moving to Reading in the summer of 1925. Although Reading would win the Third Division (South) Championship that season, Marsden played a very small part, playing only twice in October 1925 and February 1926 in 1-0 wins over Bristol City and Gillingham, and these were his last 2 appearances as a professional footballer.
