Burntisland, Fife born centre or right half John “Jock” Manning began his football career in junior football with Kirkcaldy United in 1904 before joining Raith Rovers in 1905. Two years later he was signed by First Division Blackburn Rovers, making his Football League debut against Middlesbrough in September 1907, but made only 4 appearances during his single season at Ewood Park.

He joined Southern League Northampton Town in the 1908 close season and was part of the team that won the Southern League Championship in 1908-09, and played in their 2-0 FA Charity Shield defeat by League Champions Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge in April 1909. He was also part of Northampton’s team that were Southern League runners up in 1910-11, and played out his professional career for The Cobblers.
