Guisborough, Yorkshire born centre half Christopher Mann began his football career with local team Mount Pleasant in 1891 and played for Guisborough from 1893 before signing for (still amateur) club Middlesbrough in 1896. He signed for First Division club Aston Villa in July 1897 but didn’t get to make his debut until their Sheriff of London Charity Shield match against Corinthians at The Crystal Palace in November 1899, a match Villa lost 2-1, replacing Jimmy Crabtree, his Football League debut coming three days later against Wolverhampton Wanderers. He played 8 matches over the coming weeks and 3 further matches in 1900-01 before joining Second Division club Burton United in August 1901.
A regular for Burton over the next four seasons, Mann scored 8 goals in 128 matches through to 1905, when he joined non league Gresley Rovers. He later played for Allsopp’s Brewery and Trent Rovers in 1906 before his eventual retirement.
