Description

Camberley, Surrey born inside forward Frank Manders began his football career with Camberley & York Town in 1929 before joining Southern League club Aldershot in 1930, from where he joined Third Division (South) club Crystal Palace in the 1931 close season, making his Football League debut against Coventry City that September, becoming one of Palace’s youngest ever players at age 17 years and 105 days, his only appearance of his debut season. He broke into the first eleven from September the following season, scoring twice in a 4-1 win over Southend United in his first game for a year, and scoring 10 goals during their 1932-33 campaign.

He bettered that total in 1934-35 with 14 goals, but he was transferred to Second Division Norwich City in October 1935 after 35 goals in 105 appearances for The Eagles. He missed only one match for Norwich in their 1936-37 campaign, scoring 17 goals and topping Norwich City’s goalscoring list, and he continued to appear regularly for them until the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 forced the abandonment of peacetime football, by when he had scored 43 goals in 140 appearances for The Canaries.

Manders sadly died in 1942 aged only 28, whether this was War related is uncertain.
