Masbrough, Rotherham, Yorkshire born inside left or centre forward Bertie Lyon began his football career with Overseal Town in the mid 1890’s and played for Gresley Rovers in 1896 from where he was signed by Second Division Leicester Fosse in January 1898, making his Football League debut at Luton Town, and he scored 7 goals in 16 matches for The Fossils over two seasons before joining Lancashire League club Nelson in 1900.

Lyon moved into Southern League football first with Watford in 1901, where he scored 12 goals in 30 matches during their 1901-02 campaign and was their leading scorer, then with Reading in 1902, staying only a season at Elm Park before joining West Ham United in the 1903 close season. He scored 9 goals in 33 matches for The Irons before another move in the summer of 1904 to Brighton & Hove Albion, where he scored 5 goals in 29 matches for The Seagulls.

He moved on again in the 1905 close season to Swindon Town, where he scored 7 goals in 36 matches during their 1905-06 campaign. He then spent a season with North Eastern League club Carlisle United in 1906-07 before returning to Swindon Town where he scored once in 17 further matches for The Robins before a return to Football League action with Blackpool in June 1908. He scored twice in 9 matches for The Seasiders across their 1908-09 campaign before a move to Birmingham & District League club Walsall in 1909, finishing his career with Welsh League club Tredegar in 1910.
