Kilbirnie, Ayrshire born outside right Jimmy Low began his career at junior club Bishopmill United in 1910 and joined local club Elgin City in 1911 (having been raised in Elgin) then moved south to study Agriculture at Edinburgh University, where he was playing for their football team in 1912 when scouted and signed by Heart of Midlothian.
Low broke into the strong Hearts first team as a teenager making his Scottish League debut at Rangers in September 1912 scoring in a 4-2 victory. He scored 18 goals in 83 appearances for The Jambos and also represented the Scottish League twice in 1914, playing against The Southern League in October 1914 and The Irish League in November.
Later the same month he was one of the contingent from the club who enlisted to fight in the First World War in McCrae’s Battalion. Due to his university education he was coveted by specialist units, and became a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders. In 1917 he was wounded in action, sustaining a head injury. At the end of the War he returned to Hearts and played in a dozen matches, but his injury affected his play and he was released on a free transfer.
Low returned home to play for Elgin City, however his condition improved and in March 1920 he was signed by Glasgow Rangers following a successful trial. However he found himself backup to the established Sandy Archibald at Ibrox Park and featured in only five first team matches before transferring to Newcastle United for £1,300 in October 1921.
Low remained at Newcastle for seven years and played regularly, making 121 League and Cup appearances, scoring 9 goals. Most notably he was an FA Cup winner with the Magpies in 1924, when they beat Aston Villa 2-0 in the second Final to take place at Wembley Stadium. From 1925 he was a fringe player, playing only twice as they won the League Championship in 1926-27, but he remained at the club playing his last 4 games in the first eleven in October 1927 before retirement in May 1928.
