Anderston, Glasgow born centre half Matty Lochhead started his football career with Beith Hibernians in 1905 and joined Scottish League St Mirren a year later. In 1908 he signed for Southern League Swindon Town and made 9 appearances for The Robins before joining Manchester City in May 1909. However he failed to break into the City first team and returned to Scotland with Beith Athletic in 1910.

He re-joined Swindon Town in 1911 and played for them both sides of the First World War, scoring once in 53 appearances and winning the Southern League Championship with them in 1913-14, when he made 15 League appearances. During the War he served in the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Having returned to Swindon Town after the resumption of peacetime football in 1919, he joined non league Bath City in 1920 but in May 1921 he joined his first Football League club when he signed for Third Division (South) club Reading, making his League debut that September at Northampton Town. But he was a fringe player at Elm Park managing only 7 first team appearances over two seasons before returning to Bath City in 1923, his last club before his eventual retirement.
