Description

Grantchester, Cambridgeshire born goalkeeper Archie Ling began his football career with Cambridge Swifts in 1900 and Albert Institute of Cambridge in 1901 before signing for Second Division Leicester Fosse in June 1902, making his Football League debut against Small Heath the same September. He soon established himself as principal The Fossils’ incumbent for the next two seasons, being described as “a capital exponent of the art of goalkeeping”, but lost his place to Walter Smith at the start of the 1904-05 campaign, and after only 2 further appearances, and joined Southern League Swindon Town in May 1905 after 66 appearances for Leicester.

He was Swindon’s regular goalkeeper for the following four seasons, making 147 appearances for The Robins, before moving to Brentford in 1909. At Griffin Park he was again Brentford’s principal glovesman for three further seasons but lost his place in 1912, making only one further appearance to total 118 appearances for The Bees before his retirement in 1913.

NB this image was published as “Lewis” and seems to be a misidentification. Leicester had a full back named George Lewis but the player, as well as being physically similar to Archie Ling, is identified as a goalkeeper. 4
