Bolton born full back Bob Lilley played local junior football around Bolton before joining Rochdale from Little Lever Lads in 1914. When football resumed after World War One he joined Horwich RMI before joining Central League Nelson in November 1920. When they became a fully fledged member of the Football League the following summer he played in their inaugural Football League fixture against Wigan Borough, going on to play 10 games as Nelson won The Division 3 (North) Championship in 1922-23. He played his last Nelson match in April 1925 after 69 appearances and a single goal, a penalty in an FA Cup win by 3 goals to 2 over former club Rochdale in December 1920.
