Edgbaston, Birmingham born centre forward Alfred Lea joined West Bromwich Albion in 1920, spending the 1920-21 season at The Hawthorns without making their first eleven. He joined newly elected Third Division (South) club Merthyr Town in the summer of 1921, making his debut in their inaugural Football League fixture at Brentford in August 1921, and keeping his place for their first 4 games of the season. He returned to the team in February 1922, scoring in a 3-1 win at Brighton & Hove Albion, and made in total 7 appearances before being released at the end of the 1921-22 season.
