Mexborough, Doncaster born goalkeeper Joe Langford began his football career with Darwen in 1927, and played for Tyldesley Alexandra in 1928, Conisbrough Welfare in 1929 and Shirebrook in 1930 before joining Denaby United in 1931. He joined Scarborough in 1932 before signing for Third Division (South) Torquay United, making his Football League debut at Reading in November 1933. He was understudy to Percy Maggs and made 5 appearances in his debut season, making 16 appearances in 1934-35 before joining Yeovil & Petters United in the summer of 1935 after 26 appearances.
