Description

John Alexander Lambie holds the record as the youngest ever Scotland international, youngest captain and youngest goalscorer. He was a regular in the Queens Park team from the age of 16 and played 4 ties for them in the English FA Cup in 1885 and 1886, being credited with 25 goals in 39 Cup ties for The Spiders between 1885 and 1894, including scoring 4 times in a 7-0 Scottish Cup win at Clyde in September 1887 and a hat-trick in the next round in a victory over Kelvinside Athletic the same month. He was part of Queen’s Park’s team that won The Scottish Cup beating Renton 3-1 in the 1886 Final.

He was picked for Scotland as captain, scoring in a 7-2 demolition of Ireland at The Ulster Cricket Ground, Belfast aged 17 years and 3 months on 20th March 1886, winning a further 2 caps over the next two years before going to England in May 1888 to play for amateur clubs London Caledonians and The Corinthians, which effectively ended his international career as at the time only Scottish based players were considered for internationals.

He was the older brother of William Lambie, who was also a teenage Scottish international.
