Born in Edmonton, London at the time of the eponymous First World War battle, inside right Verdun Jones was on the books at Aston Villa from where he joined Derby County in 1937, making his Football League debut in a home win over Stoke City in February 1938, also playing in a defeat at Arsenal three days later. He remained on the Rams’ books the next season, but his playing whereabouts are unknown until he appears to have joined Southend United in May 1948, although he never made The Shrimpers’ first team.
