Newstead, Nottinghamshire born inside left Freddie Jones began his football career with local junior clubs Annesley and Sutton Junction, from where he signed for First Division club Notts County in 1907, making his Football League debut against Bury that October. After a promising first season he found opportunities hard to come by the next season, but in 1909-10 he was The Magpies’ second top scorer behind Jimmy Cantrell with 19 goals. However he again fell out of favour in 1910-11 and joined Southern League club Coventry City that summer after 28 goals in 70 matches for Notts County.
At Coventry he had an excellent season, scoring 21 goals in 37 matches, and he returned to Notts County after a single season, at the end of which Notts County were relegated to the Second Division, Jones having scored 3 goals in 21 further matches for Notts. He returned to Coventry City scoring 4 goals in 19 matches during 1913-14 and in April 1914 he joined Southampton. Described as “a burly, bustling inside-left”, Jones made his debut in the opening match of the 1914-15 season, scoring in a 3-3 draw against Luton Town. Jones soon formed a “potent partnership” with fellow forwards Sid Kimpton and Arthur Dominy, who was the leading scorer in the Southern League with 30 goals. In his one season with The Saints, Jones made a total of 35 appearances, scoring 14 goals, before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football.
After the War Jones rejoined by now League club Coventry City and scored once in 3 matches during 1919-20 before a move to Wrexham in 1920. He later played for Pembroke Dock in 1921 and Ebbw Vale in 1922 before his eventual retirement.
