Born in Oban, Argyll and Bute, defender Ian Johnstone began his football career with Arniston Rangers, from where he signed for Partick Thistle in April 1935, making his Scottish League debut at Aberdeen that October. He made 20 appearances for The Jags before a transfer to Third Lanark in 1937, where his career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.
