Sunderland born right back John Johnstone began his football career with Sunderland Royal Rovers in 1906 and spent 1907-08 on the books at Middlesbrough without breaking into their first eleven. He joined Second Division club Clapton Orient in the 1908 close season, making his Football League debut at Hull City that September, where he was ever present in his debut season and missed very few matches over seven seasons at Lea Bridge Road, scoring once, in a home defeat to Oldham Athletic in December 1909, in 224 matches, and helping them finish fourth in successive seasons in 1910-11 and 1911-12 before his career was effectively ended by the onset of the First World War, which forced the cessation of peacetime football in May 1915.
