Description

Ecclesfield, Sheffield born centre half Tom Johnson began his football career with Ecclesfield United in 1927 and signed for First Division Sheffield United in September 1928, making his Football League debut against Bolton Wanderers in March 1930, initially being restricted to occasional appearances until after Sheffield United’s relegation from the First Division in 1934 in a season when he played 14 times, one more than the accumulated number of appearances he’d made in the previous four seasons.

Thereafter however he was a regular member of The Blades’ first team, being a member of their losing 1936 FA Cup Final line up narrowly beaten by Arsenal at Wembley and gaining promotion back to the First Division in 1939 as Club Captain, an honour bestowed the year before, when Sheffield United finished runners up in the Second Division.

However The Second World War intervened after 205 matches for Sheffield United, and Johnson remained with United until 1941 while working in a reserved occupation, playing regularly in the wartime leagues as well as making guest occasional appearances for Stockport County, Sheffield Wednesday and Chesterfield.

After the War he joined Lincoln City in March 1946, playing 80 games in three seasons at Sincil Bank, winning the Division Three (North) Championship with The Imps in 1948, before his retirement in 1949.

His father Harry Johnson was a stalwart of Sheffield United’s teams either side of the turn of the century, and an England international. His older brother, also Harry Johnson, holds The Blades’ all time goalscoring record, as well as the all time League scoring record for Mansfield Town.
