Wednesbury, Staffordshire born inside left Joe Johnson began his football career with Bradley United immediately after the end of the First World War and played for Talbot Stead Tube Works in 1920 and Cannock Town in 1921 before joining Second Division club Crystal Palace in June 1922, making his Football League debut at Rotherham County the same November. He stayed in the team until the end of March but then spent two seasons as a fringe player at Selhurst Park, scoring 6 goals in 31 appearances before a move to Barnsley in June 1925.
He scored twice in 14 matches for Barnsley but clearly caught the attention of West Ham United who signed him in July 1926, the only First Division club of his career, where he scored on his debut in a win over Huddersfield Town in February 1927. Despite 7 goals in 14 matches before the season end, he fell out of favour at Upton Park and played just once more the next season win another win over Huddersfield that September before a move to Southend United in August 1928. However he didn’t make Southend’s first eleven and moved to Walsall in April 1929, where he scored in his only appearance for The Saddlers in an FA Cup defeat at Aston Villa in January 1930.
He moved on to Wigan Borough in May 1930 where he was a regular in the side, scoring 9 goals in 31 appearances during a single season at Springfield Park, joining Halifax Town in July 1931. After 6 goals in 30 appearances for The Shaymen, he again moved on in June 1932 joining Accrington Stanley, where he recorded 8 goals in 28 matches during their 1932-33 campaign before a return to Cannock Town in 1933. He later played for Cradley Heath before his eventual retirement.
