Description

Hylton, Sunderland born right half George Hunter began his career as a centre forward, leading the line for Walker Parish Church and then Hylton Colliery. During the First World War he played for the West Yorkshire Regiment Battalion team and The Royal Air Force, and after the War he joined his hometown professional club in June 1921 from Hylton Colliery, making his Sunderland debut in an FA Cup tie against Liverpool in January 1922. An occasional starter, he made 12 First Division and FA Cup appearances for Sunderland over his two seasons at Roker Park before joining Exeter City in the 1923 close season.

His season in Devon saw him make 24 appearances for The Grecians before he returned north to play for North Eastern League club Workington in 1924. He spent a season with both Southend United and Doncaster Rovers in 1924-25 and 1925-26 but failed to make either first eleven, before joining Midland League club Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1926, his final senior club.
