Description

Crosby Ravensworth, Cumberland born outside left Jack Huggins began his football career with Bede College and Leadgate Park, from where he was signed by Sunderland in 1906, making his Football League debut that October, scoring in a 4-1 win over Manchester United, one of two goals in 7 matches during their 1906-07 campaign. He played 7 further matches the next season before joining Southern League club Reading in 1908, where he scored 6 goals in 34 matches for The Royals during a single season at ElmPark before returning to Sunderland in 1009. However he didn’t get back into their first eleven and joined North Eastern League club Durham City, and also played for Wingate before his retirement.

A pre-war member of the Bede College company in the Durham Light Infantry, Huggins re-enlisted as a private in the regiment soon after Britain’s entry into the First World War. He was killed on or near Gravenstafel Ridge during the Second Battle of Ypres on 25–26 April 1915. After being initially buried by the Germans in a cemetery in Wallemolen, Belgium, Huggins’ remains were moved to Perth (China Wall) Cemetery after the War.
