Bolton, Lancashire born inside forward Joe Hodgkinson played for Rossendale United in 1904 before signing for First Division club Bury in May 1905, making his Football League debut at Derby County that September. He played 7 times for Bury during the 1905-06 season before joining Southern League Crystal Palace the following summer, for whom he scored once in 5 appearances during 1906-07. He then returned north to join Stockport County, but never made their first team, and drifted out of the professional game.
NB this photograph was taken before a match at Nottingham Forest on 16th September 1905. Forest won the game 3-2.
