Oldham, Lancashire born right back Billy Hilton played junior football for Bedford Lads in 1931 and New Mills in 1932 before joining hometown professional Second Division club Oldham Athletic, for whom he made his Football League debut at Brentford in March 1935. Described as “athletic.. a relentless tackler with a powerful and sure kick”, he played 9 times before the end of the season but couldn’t help prevent Oldham’s relegation at the season end. Thereafter he became a regular for The Latics before the outbreak of the Second World War, which forced the suspension of peacetime football in September 1939, and effectively ended Hilton’s professional career, after 5 goals, all penalties, in 147 appearances.
