Liverpool born right half Sam Hignett began his senior football career with hometown club Liverpool, signing for them in December 1903. A fixture in the reserve team over seven years at Anfield, he made his Football League debut, and only appearance for the club, in a 1-0 win over Sunderland in October 1907. The match programme said Liverpool’s defence were shaky but Hignett was “distinctly promising. At first he was nervous and anxious but afterwards he controlled his wing admirably.” He stayed at Anfield until being released in January 1911.
