Newburn, Newcastle born outside Bob Hewitson, joined Second Division club Hull City from Newburn in 1912 and made his Football League debut against Glossop in April 1913, his only appearance for The Tigers deputising for regular winger Gordon Wright, before his release at the end of the season. He then joined Blyth Spartans but his career was effectively ended by the onset of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football at the end of season.
