Lanark born right back Jimmy Hay played junior football for Renfrew Victoria in 1900 and joined Second Division club Barnsley in 1901, making his Football League debut at Arsenal in September 1901. He had six seasons at Oakwell scoring once (in an FA Cup tie against Swindon Town in December 1902) in 159 appearances, before joining Chesterfield Town in the summer of 1908, for whom he made 39 appearances in 1908-09, missing just one match. But after a single season at Saltergate he joined Birmingham League Stoke in the summer of 1909, where he saw out his professional career.
