Born in Airdrie, winger John Hastie played junior football for Eastwood Juniors in 1917 and began his senior career with St Mirren in 1918 before heading south to join Southern League Reading at the start of the 1919-20 season. In January 1920 he signed for Plymouth Argyle but made just two appearances at outside-right before moving on to First Division Middlesbrough at the end of the campaign. He made his Football League debut against Oldham Athletic on the opening day of the 1920-21 season. After just a single appearance he returned to Scotland to sign for Dundee in 1921, his last recorded club.
