Despite a considerable likeness to Newcastle United stalwart Joe Harvey, who was English and at Bournemouth during 1938-39 (and a comparison of photos suggests the teeth are not the same), this player’s identity is somewhat of a mystery, other than he was clearly good enough to be featured on a trade card at the time. Playing at centre half, Harvey had a single season at Kilmarnock, scoring twice in 36 appearances for Killie during their 1938-39 Scottish First Division campaign, the final peacetime season before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 forced the abandonment of peacetime football. It is possible but fairly improbable that this could be the same J Harvey who played for Kilmarnock in the early 1920’s (see another page on this site J Harvey, Kilmarnock) but the time difference makes that seem unlikely.
