Blackburn born winger John Hargreaves attended Malvern College where he began playing football in 1878-79. He played for Blackburn Rovers between 1878 and 1884 playing in their FA Cup win in 1884 when they beat Queen’s Park 2-1 in the Final, as well as playing for them in the 1882 Final, when they lost to Old Etonians. He made two appearances for England in 1881. He was first selected against Wales at Blackburn in February, and then subsequently against Scotland at The Kennington Oval in March. England lost both games, 0-1 and 1-6 respectively. He also represented the Lancashire Football Association.
