Manchester born inside forward Jimmy Hanson began his football career in junior football with Manchester YMCA in 1920 and played for Bradford Parish in 1921 before spending 1922-23 on the books of Stalybridge Celtic, without making an appearance for their first eleven. In 1923 he joined Manchester North End and from there signed for Second Division Manchester United, making his Football League debut against Hull City in November 1924, scoring in a 2-0 win at Old Trafford. Despite this and 2 more goals in each of his two appearances over the next two weeks, he wasn’t seen again in what was United’s promotion season as Second Division Champions.

Hanson then scored in his first First Division match against Aston Villa in September 1925 and this feat of scoring in four consecutive League appearances remains a Manchester United club record. It was only in the First Division that he truly got his opportunity, his best season being 1928-29 when he was an ever present and scored 20 goals across the campaign, making him comfortably the club’s top scorer. However, he broke his fibia on Christmas Day 1929 in a home match against Birmingham City and never played again, being forced to retire in 1931 after 52 goals in 147 appearances for The Red Devils.
