Description

Wolverhampton, Staffordshire born goalkeeper John Hampton started his football career at the end of the First World War with Wellington Town in 1918, joining Oakengates Town a year later. From there he joined hometown Second Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers as understudy to Noel George, making his Football League debut at Fulham in August 1922. After 18 appearances in his first season he had to wait until January 1926 for another first team match due to George’s consistency, but he had two good runs in the first team in 1926 and 1927, and by the time he joined First Division club Derby County in the close season of 1927 he had made 51 appearances for his hometown club.

However opportunities at The Baseball Ground were no more frequent with Harry Wilkes ensconced as the principal glovesman, and he made only 12 appearances in three seasons before returning to the Second Division to join Preston North End in 1930. At Deepdale he was their number one for 1930-31, making 38 appearances, before joining Irish League club Dundalk in the 1931 close season where he finished his senior career, returning to play for Wellington Town in 1934 before his eventual retirement.
