Woolwich born full back Sydney Hammond joined West Ham United as an amateur in 1904 and made his West Ham debut in a Southern League fixture at Tottenham Hotspur in January 1905. In total he made 34 appearances for them in League and FA Cup through to April 1908. During the First World War he enlisted, serving in the Royal Field Artillery, and was killed in action in October 1917 at Paschendaele. He is buried in La Clytte Cemetery, Belgium.
