Wallasey, Wirral born full back Herbert “Duke” Hamilton played junior football for New Brighton Baptists in 1921, Harrowby in 1922 and Poulton Rovers in 1923 before joining local professional club New Brighton in December 1923, making his Football League debut at Ashington the same month. It proved his only appearance for New Brighton before he joined First Division Everton in October 1924, for whom he was largely a reserve, making one appearance for the first team in January 1927 against Tottenham Hotspur. Of his 6 seasons at Saltergate he was ever present in two and missed a single game in another, scoring 7 goals in 211 appearances before returning to The Wirral to join Tranmere Rovers in May 1937. He was again an ever present in 1937-38 but joined Accrington Stanley in November 1938 after a single goal in 54 appearances, playing 14 times for Stanley before joining non league Bangor City in 1939. He later returned to Merseyside to play for Marine.
