East Holywell, County Durham born goalkeeper Joe Hall began his football career with Backworth Percy from where he joined Third Division (South) club Southend United, making his Football League debut in a defeat at Swindon Town in April 1922 in the absence of regular goalkeeper Tommy Capper. The fokkowing season Hall started as understudy to Walter Jennings but took over the gloves in November, and was the principal goalkeeper in 1923-24, making 64 matches for The Shrimpers. However his career from 1924 is uncertain.
