Norwich born right back Sam Gunton began his football career with Norwich St James and signed for Southern League Norwich City in 1908, before joining Midland League club Doncaster Rovers in 1910. In the summer of 1911 he signed for Second Division Gainsborough Trinity, for whom he made his Football League debut at Chelsea at the end of September 1911. He was a regular in the remainder of Trinity’s final season in the League before they lost their League status, and having made 33 appearances, along with fellow full back Cliff Jones and goalkeeper Ronnie Sewell, he was signed by Second Division Burnley in the summer of 1912.

However he made only one appearance for The Clarets’ first team, playing in a 3-3 draw at Bristol City in February 1913 during Burnley’s promotion season as they finished runners up in the Second Division, before leaving the professional game.
