Description

Birtley, County Durham born left half Bob Greener began his football career with Birtley Colliery and signed for Second Division club Crystal Palace in September 1921, making his Football League debut at Bradford Park Avenue in April 1922, his only appearance of his debut season. He broke into the first team from the following September and missed only 5 matches as Palace suffered relegation in 1924-25, and one match the following season, continuing as a stalwart in Palace’s starting line up until March 1932, during which time they twice finished runners up in the Third Division (South), narrowly missing out on promotion.

After 6 goals in 316 matches for Crystal Palace, Greener joined York City in October 1932 where he made 25 appearances for The Minstermen in a season in which they struggled towards the bottom of the Third Division (North), before his playing retirement. After retiring, he returned to Crystal Palace as assistant trainer and later was their trainer.

NB in the photograph he stands on the left with Crystal Palace manager Alex Maley.
