Rotherham born full back Alf Green joined Midland League Rotherham Town in 1913, joining Southern League Exeter City in July 1914. Despite the intervention of World War One, he resumed with Exeter when peacetime football returned and played 32 matches in their inaugural Football League campaign of 1920-21 despite having missed the first few weeks of the season. He played his last game for Exeter City on Christmas Eve 1921 against Watford, after 43 Football League appearances in addition to his Southern League and Cup outings.
