Description

Hurlford, Ayrshire born centre or wing half Jock Goldie began his football career with Hurlford Thistle in 1907 and signed for Second Division Fulham in 1908, making his Football League debut against Derby County that December. However he was little more than a fringe player during his three seasons at Craven Cottage, making 33 appearances, before a transfer to Glossop in June 1911 gave him the chance of regular first team football.

After a single season and 34 appearances for The Hillmen, he was transferred to Bury in September 1912, and he remained a regular in The Shakers’ first team until peacetime football was suspended due to the onset of the First World War in 1915. During the War he played on loan with Kilmarnock between 1915 and 1918, as well as having a spell on loan at Dundee in 1917, but he returned to Gigg Lane after peacetime football resumed and was a near ever present with Bury during 1919-20.

In the 1920 close season he rejoined Kilmarnock “for a big fee” on a permanent basis and had a spell on loan at Clyde in 1922. He had arrived at Rugby Park under the cloud of suspected match-fixing but it took a further three years before he was found guilty by the FA and banned for life.

His older brother Archie played for Clyde and Liverpool, as well as New Brighton Tower, Small Heath and Crewe Alexandra, and his other brother Bill also played for Fulham, as well as for Clyde, Liverpool and Leicester Fosse.
