Portchester, Hampshire born right back Basil Gates and his brother Eric both were in the (Isthmian League) London Caledonians team that won the FA Amateur Cup in 1923, beating Evesham Town 2-1 in the Final at The Crystal Palace and in so doing gaining national eminence. He was also part of Caley’s team that won The Isthmian League Championship in 1924-25.

Gates represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in 1920, and made a single Football League appearance as an amateur for Southend United, making the lengthy journey to Aberdare Athletic on 28th March 1925 where he had the misfortune to score an own goal in a 3-0 defeat. Gates won 5 England Amateur caps between January 1920 and January 1922, captaining the team against Wales in January 1921.

His brother Eric also played for London Caledonians and won several England Amateur caps in the mid/late 1920’s, although unlike Basil he never featured in the Football League.
