Renton, Dumbartonshire born wing half Ted Garry started as a forward playing as an amateur for Dumbarton Harp in 1902, and Galston in 1903  and from there signed for Glasgow Celtic in January 1905. After being briefly loaned to Ayr United in 1905, he made his Celtic debut in a Scottish League 1-0 home win over Hearts on April 21st 1906. However with Celtic boasting the attacking prowess of Bennett, Quinn, McMenemy, Hamilton and Somers it was always going to be very difficult for Garry to force himself into first team contention. Consequently he made just six appearances for Celtic and scored a solitary goal scored against Hearts in a 3-3 draw in May 1906, his final Bhoys appearance, and then later in 1906 he was loaned to Stenhousemuir.

He moved on to Derby County in May 1907 and made his Football League debut against Lincoln City that September, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-0 win. He would later convert into a more defensive player from 1910 onwards. He played 22 League games as Derby won the Second Division Championship in 1911-12 but only made 3 further appearances in the First Division before joining Bradford Park Avenue in May 1913 after 19 goals in 129 appearances for The Rams. After 46 appearances for Avenue and with the advent of the First World War, he returned to Scotland and re-joined Dumbarton in 1915.

After his retirement from playing he later coached in Spain, including a stint at RCD Espanyol in Barcelona and with Real Sociedad.
