Stanton Hill, Nottinghamshire born centre half Fred Garratt signed for First Division Notts County in 1909 from local side Stanton Hill Victoria, making his Football League debut at Middlesbrough in March 1910. However opportunities were very limited at Meadow Lane and he only managed 8 appearances over the course of three seasons before moving to Second Division club Stockport County in the 1912 close season, where he was an ever present in his first season. He played for The Hatters both sides of the First World War, during which he scored 3 goals in 73 wartime appearances for County, playing his last matches for them in April 1921, a season when they finished bottom of the Second Division and were relegated, prompting Garratt’s retirement from the professional game after scoring 10 goals in 143 appearances.

NB the photograph was taken before an opening day match at St Andrews on 3rd September 1913, Birmingham beat Stockport County 3-2.
