Ripley, Derbyshire born left winger Fred Fletcher began his senior football career with First Division Derby County, for whom he made his Football League debut at Sunderland in September 1894 in a heavy defeat, appearing only twice more for Derby before being transferred to Second Division Notts County in November. Fletcher scored once in only five matches before the end of the season as Notts County finished runners up in the Second Division, he then scored in their Test Match defeat to former club Derby County at Filbert Street, Leicester at the end of April.

He scored twice in a 7-2 win over Burslem Port Vale in his first outing in 1895-96, which didn’t come until December, but played only 3 more matches for The Magpies before joining non league Worcester Rovers (which would soon become Worcester City) in the summer of 1896 after 4 goals in 10 appearances for Notts County.
