New Cumnock, Ayrshire born full back Robert Ferrans joined Merthyr Town after the end of World War One and played 34 times in their inaugural Football League season in 1920-21, making his debut against Watford in October 1920. In 6 seasons at Merthyr he made 199 appearances, scoring 2 goals, both from the penalty spot. In the summer of 1926 he joined First Division Sheffield Wednesday, but never played for their first eleven.
