Description

Right half Freddie “F.H.” Ewer was born in West Ham, London on 30th September 1898 and joined both The Corinthians and The Casuals in 1922. He played 105 matches for The Casuals and 160 matches for The Corinthians between 1922 and 1934, scoring 3 goals, the 10th highest appearance maker in the club’s history. He was considered amongst the leading amateurs of his era and was a resolute, gritty performer. He was awarded two England full international caps in 1924, playing first against France in Paris in May and then against Belgium at The Hawthorns that December. He had also been a reserve as England played Ireland in October 1924 at Goodison Park, and was again a reserve in April 1930 when England played Scotland at Wembley.

He also gained 14 England amateur international caps between November 1923 and March 1930, being captain on his last 3 appearances and scoring once in a 3-2 win over the South African tourists at White Hart Lane in November 1924. Ewer also featured for The Amateurs in their 1923 and 1924 F.A. Charity Shield defeats to The Professionals but made amends by playing in their 6-3 victory at Maine Road in October 1926. He also played for Corinthians in their 1927 FA Charity Shield defeat to Cardiff City. He later became joint secretary of The Corinthians in the 1937-38 season.
