Description
Thrapston, Northamptonshire born inside forward Matt Ellson signed for Second Division club Leeds United in 1920 from Frickley Colliery, where he had played since the end of the First World War, and if his achievements were perhaps limited he will always be remembered by Leeds United fans as being a member of their inaugural Football League campaign, when he second top scored with 8 goals in 36 appearances, making his Football League debut against South Shields in Leeds’ first home League fixture. However he lost his place over the close season and only played once more for them, against Notts County in December 1921, before re-joining Frickley Colliery before the year end. He returned to Football League action with Third Division (North) club Halifax Town in August 1922, and scored 6 goals for The Shaymen in 27 appearances over the next two seasons before finishing his professional career in 1924.
