Brandon Colliery, County Durham born goalkeeper Charlie Edwards began his football career with Edmondsley in 1914 before the First World War, but after the conflict he joined Burnley in April 1919, spending 1919-20 on their books as understudy to Jerry Dawson without making a first team appearance. He joined Central League club Tranmere Rovers in 1920 before joining newly elected Third Division (North) club Durham City in August 1921, where he was understudy to George Patchett, making his Football League debut at former club Tranmere Rovers in April 1922. He made a pair of appearances before the season end and a further 7 appearances in the autumn of 1922 before joining non league Spennymoor United in the summer of 1923.
