Description

Crewe, Cheshire born inside forward Frank Edgley began his football career with hometown Birmingham & District League club Crewe Alexandra, from where he was signed by First Division club Sheffield United in May 1903, making his Football League debut at Liverpool in March 1904. Given only occasional opportunities at Bramall Lane, he made 5 appearances during two seasons with The Blades, before joining Southern League club Fulham in the 1905 close season. He was part of Fulham’s squad that won the Southern League Championship in 1905-06 but after a single season at Craven Cottage he moved to Reading in 1906. Two more seasons with The Royals ensued before Edgley joined North Eastern League club Hartlepools United in 1908, his last known club before his eventual retirement.

NB he was most likely the older brother of Harold Edgley, also born in Crewe, and where there is a physical likeness. Harold Edgley played for Aston Villa both sides of the First World War as well as for Queen’s Park Rangers and Stockport County.
