Description

Stepney, London born outside right George Douglas had been an England schoolboy international while playing in junior football, where he played for St Saviour’s in Forest Gate in 1909, Custom House in 1910 and Ilford in 1911, when Leicester Fosse moved for his signature, Douglas making his Football League debut for The Fossils in the Second Division against Hull City in December 1912.

He played both sides of the First World War for Leicester, during which he served in the Armed Forces, scoring 11 goals in 133 appearances, before joining Burnley in February 1921, who were pretty much the best side in England at the time and were in their League Championship season. However he only played twice that season and 3 times the next as they finished third in the League Championship, before joining Oldham Athletic in May 1922.

Oldham were relegated from the First Division in his first season at Boundary Park but he continued as a regular for a further three seasons scoring 9 goals in 141 matches before moving to Bristol Rovers in the summer of 1926. His final two seasons in The Football League saw 49 appearances and 6 goals for Rovers, before he moved into non league football as player-manager of Kent League club Tunbridge Wells Rangers in 1928, already in his mid 30’s, where he stayed in the job for two years. He later played for Dover United in 1930 before his eventual retirement.
