New Brighton born wing half Jim Dougherty started his football career with Liscard in 1897 before joining New Brighton Tower later the same year. He had a spell at Chorley in 1898 before re-joining New Brighton Tower, for whom he made his Football League debut against Lincoln City in September 1900, making 12 appearances. However when New Brighton were not re-elected, he joined Small Heath, soon to be re-named Birmingham, in the summer of 1901, enjoying 7 seasons at St Andrew’s and scoring 3 times in 136 games, before joining Southern League Coventry City in 1908. He joined non league Stirchley United in 1909 and played for Worcester City in 1910.
